| The streak is alive, and so is the magic of 20-year old golfing sensation from Mysore Rahul Ganapathy. He became the first Indian from south to win the National Amateur Golf championship in its 99-year history. Rahul Ganapathy won the title in the 36-hole final of the 99th Amateur Golf championship of India held at the Delhi Golf course from February 6 to 13. | Rahul has turned in a professional golfer and has been having a good season taking part in the Indian tour this year. He is at present leading the rankings and tops the ratings for the Mahindra "Rookie of the year" award with 45 points and 1.3 lakhs prize money. |
| Rahul Ganapathy, a product of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf club, Mysore won his maiden National title when he beat Sourabh Bahuguna 3-2 in a closely contested encounter. Rahul showed lot of composure and grit to take an early three-stroke lead in the 34th hole, and it was an uphill task for Saurabh Bahuguna to comeback after lagging behind. This was the last of the amateur tournament for the season, and Rahul ended it in style, with a triumph. |
| Rahul who had won his first title as an amateur at KGA, Bangalore two seasons ago has made steady progress in the amateur circuit. Ranked number four among the amateurs behind Ashok Kumar, Rahil Ganjee and Simarjeet Singh, in 1999, Rahul represented the country on two occasions in the Sri Lanka amateur Match play championship where he lost in the semifinals, and also played in the Singapore amateur tourney. |
| Rahul Ganapathy was sponsored by M/s.Fouress Finance Pvt. Limited till October 1999. Since then, he is employed with M/s.Oil India Limited. Rahul gained the needed exposure on his overseas tours, which helped him a great deal in his learning process. |
| Rahul had a stint with world famous Italian coach Donato Do Ponziono three years back. Presently he is being coached by former international coach Brendon D'souza. As Brendon is based in Calcutta, Rahul goes over to Calcutta two or three times a year to train with him. Otherwise, when Brendon D'souza comes down south, Rahul goes over and trains with him. Rahul is a hardworking and dedicated golfer, who has a very tight training schedule. His day begins with yoga and then he practices at the JWGC for a seven hour session which is spread into three parts. |
