Sports Hostel (Mysore) -A Front Runner In Promoting Sports

Department of Youth Services and Sports and Sports Authority of Karnataka with the help of the government have evolved a concept of promoting sports schools in cities and mofussil centers in order to tap fresh sporting talent.

  The scheme has helped many a students from middle class background to take up to sports as their career and have gone to become outstanding sports personalities. The Sports Hostel in Mysore started in 1982 and is in its twenty-seventh year.

This organization comes under the Department of Youth Services and Sports and is headed by Mr. Ramesh, Dy.Director, DYSS, Mysore at the Chamundivihar Stadium, Nazarbad.

  Mysore, Mandya, Kodagu, Chikamangalur, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan and Chamarajanagar come under the DYSS, Mysore.     The Sports Hostel in Mysore had disciplines in Basket ball, Hockey. Volleyball, athletics (only for women) and Table Tennis. Specialized coaching is given to the selected candidates by SAI/SAK coaches. The Present coaches  are: Basketball(Mr. M.B. Patil), Hockey (Mr. Vijaykrishna), Volleyball (Mr. Ashok), Athletics (Mr. Damodar Gowda) and Gymnastics (Lokesh and B.Balu).
Selection Basis:
   Every year the students are selected to the Sports Hostel in Mysore, Bangalore, Belgum, Gulbarga, Dharwad and Kodagu. The Dept. Of Youth Services every year advertises for admission to Sports Hostel's in Jan/Feb, and they are admitted after the selection basis is completed in May/Jun every year. The Sports Hostel provides free boarding and lodging facilities and also gets the students admitted to schools/ colleges. The academic career of the students are also taken by the authorities.
Facilities:
  The Department of Youth Services and Sports, Mysore have their own hockey ground, multipurpose stadium for athletics and other sports, basketball ground and indoor stadium for indoor practice. The Department sponsors the students to various state level competitions and All-India tournaments.
   Many outstanding sportsmen have emerged out of this programme and top players like B.M.Geetha (Hockey), E.B. Shyla (Athletics), Supriya (Volleyball), Pavithra Chandra , Savitha (Basketball) have gone on to represent the country, and have brought laurels to the organization and our city with their feats.
